Welcome to Religious Studies: Philosophy, Ethics and Religion A Level

Ethics is regarded as the framework we use to make moral decisions, which, ultimately, are all decisions! It may not seem a moral decision to buy a skin cream or a cup of coffee, or to go to the shops or out for a meal, but they are! Is that skin cream tested on animals? Do the coffee growers get a fair wage? Will you walk to the shops or take a bus? What are the environmental impacts of the products you buy? How are the staff treated in the restaurant you are going to? Will you choose a vegetarian option? Some of the specific topics include medical ethics in terms of euthanasia and abortion, and legal policies such as nuclear deterrent and animal experimentation.

Philosophy is about the views we take on things. It’s also about structuring arguments. You encounter the use of philosophical arguments every day. From politicians trying to convince you of a policy change, to manufacturers trying to convince you to buy their products. A well-structured argument can change the world! Particular subjects include how religious believers can believe in an all-powerful, all-loving, all-knowing God whilst simultaneously admitting that evil and suffering exists.

The religion of study is Christianity as it has historically shaped Great Britain and its customs. We look at how Christianity developed and investigate its attitudes to women, and how these religious attitudes permeate our society. We also look at how non-religious factors affect the practices and beliefs of Christians. One of the significant areas we look at is whether Christianity should be ‘demythologised’ which means whether Christianity should get rid of ideas such as miracles, the resurrection and the virgin birth. Could this still be Christianity without this?

In addition to/ instead of the activities in this booklet you could work through these tasks (you will need to sign up first). They are free 12 hour Open University Courses, upon the completion of which, you will receive a certificate of participation
